HBM has proven energy saving benefits including the significant savings associated with utilising cold mix technology and also incorporation of by-products such as pulverised fuel ash and slag. The process is also useful for the treatment of contaminated materials where a process called stabilisation and solidification can be used to ‘immobilise’ contaminated materials as well as improving their engineering properties.
Stabilisation is a process that combines soil, cement and water to produce a hard, durable paving material that can be used for the foundation of road and airport pavements, parking and storage areas.
Some HBM mixtures allow the re-use of materials available on site (e.g. soil, demolition wastes) with savings on imported primary material (avoiding the Aggregates Levy) and disposal costs of sending materials to landfill. Cementitious material can be used to treat most soils.
Plant for laying and compaction of HBM is similar to that required for laying and compacting other paving materials such as unbound layers or bituminous bound products. In addition CEMEX own specialist mix-inplace plant suitable for soil stabalisation applications.
