Scottish employees of CEMEX UK, building materials provider, launched the company's new 'Lendahand' employee volunteer programme at Baron's Haugh RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) Reserve near Motherwell.
Lendahand, a national programme, was launched by employees from the Uddingston office and nearby operational sites who lent a hand to remove invasive scrub, clear woodland and monitor birdlife at the Reserve.
One of the employees, Linzi McDade Senior Area Geologist " I hope that the time we spent through Lendahand will make a real difference, it was certainly rewarding for us. Working in the Reserve helped me to visualise the habitats that we could create when we restore quarries that have come to the end of their lives and with the restoration of the land, the sort of wildlife that we could attract.
Other Scottish employees involved in the day certainly felt it was worthwhile. Paul Rosie, Scotland Regional Director "I thoroughly enjoyed the day, learning both about the wildlife and as important, more about the people I work with." Phillip Banks, Customer Service Advisor "It was great to give something back to the community and hopefully it will encourage more local people, as it is more accessible to use the Reserve."
The new programme entitles every CEMEX UK employee to eight hours paid time off work to help out in their local communities or organisations each year, supported by the company.
This could range from working with a local charity to reading to children at a local library or working with one of the company's Foundation Partner Organisations such as the RSPB.
