Building materials company CEMEX UK has been recognised for its outstanding health and safety initiatives, both at company and individual level, at this year’s Mineral Products Association (MPA) Health & Safety Awards held at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. The company won the prestigious MPQC Trophy (Mineral Products Qualification Council) for its three training films, received three ‘highly commended’ for business initiatives plus individual recognition for three CEMEX employees.
The MPQC Trophy was awarded for a series of three training films, focussing on slips trips and falls, lock out tag out and safe driving, developed by CEMEX to raise awareness amongst employees and contractors of the most common causes of injury. After contributing to the work of a multi national team to develop the videos in a Region of CEMEX, the films were utilised across the breadth of the UK operations. They feature cartoon characters who, with humour, demonstrate the wrong way of undertaking tasks followed by real life footage of correct behaviours; thanks go to AXA Corporate Solutions for the support they gave to the Region in the development of the Safe Driving film
The ‘highly commended’ awards were in acknowledgement of engineering initiatives at Attenborough quarry for electric winch improvements to aid the safe operation of tugs and barges and CEMEX Marine for their innovative solution for minimising the risk of falls from the top of vertical fixed ladders.
The individuals recognised “for going that extra mile” were Chris King, CEMEX Marine for investigating incidents related to work at height and Bob Stevens, Tipper driver and Peter Ward, Cement driver for the additional work in assisting with the training DVD and cyclist safety events.
Vice President of CEMEX’s Readymix and Mortars division, Chris Leese, is Chair of the MPA Health and Safety Committee. He said: "We must congratulate everyone from CEMEX who has been involved in the many worthwhile projects and initiatives which help to raise the health and safety standards in our work place and on this occasion, received recognition for their hard work. We must continue to vigilant and aim to achieve 'Zero Harm'."
