CEMEX UK, the building materials supplier, has invested in a replacement readymix concrete plant, erected on the existing Stanley Street site in Blackburn, Lancashire.
The investment in the new plant demonstrates CEMEX's commitment to the UK construction industry and ensures good quality concrete for local construction projects.
CEMEX has replaced the old plant, which was constructed 42 years ago, to incorporate a more sustainable operation and to give more choice in the type and quantity of products to meet the increasing demand for flexibility and quality from customers.
The plant is equipped with a mixer which allows local customers and builders to collect their own concrete, as well as having it delivered. This is a new facility which CEMEX was unable to offer with the old plant.
The IMER plant is capable of producing up to 60 cu metres of ready mixed concrete per hour through the CEMEX Ginco automatic batching system. It incorporates a new design hopper and wider conveyor belt feeding the materials into the mixer to maximise speed of production and reduce energy consumption.
Key elements of the sustainable production are a concrete recycling system and 100% water recycling. Rainwater and waste water are harvested through a 30,000 litre tank at the end of the site and then recycled and used in the production of the concrete.
Last year the plant supplied 306 local customers with ready mixed concrete, including material for significant construction projects such as Blackburn's Mall shopping centre. Currently, concrete is being supplied to two schools in the town involved in the Building Schools for the Future programme.
