CEMEX UK’s Rochester cement works in Kent has been an important part of the local community in Halling for many years.

Closure of much of the plant in 2000 provided an opportunity to re-think the future of the site.

The company began consulting with the local community early in 2006 over plans to demolish the works and to replace it with a vibrant new waterside community.

Master Plan

At that point the company favoured a development option which would have provided 700 new homes.

Having considered the views offered by all the key stakeholders, the company came back in November 2007 with revised proposals which envisage 550 homes in a scheme which also involves no built development on Green Belt Land. The company is now submitting an outline planning application to Medway Council, marking an exciting new beginning for a site whose future has been uncertain for seven years. The company believes the proposed lakeside community and adjoining new employment opportunities would contribute to a prosperous future for the area.
