Rüdersdorf

Alternative fuels account for 53% of total energy needs at CEMEX’s cement works at Rüdersdorf on the outskirts of Berlin in Germany. 40% of this is refuse-derived fuel (Climafuel). The plant is in an area that produces some three million tonnes of waste each year. Previously, the vast majority of this was dumped in landfill. Over the past decade, the use of alternative fuels at Rüdersdorf has resulted in a 50% reduction in emissions of oxides of nitrogen.

Kollenbach

At Kollenbach plant in Beckum, near Dortmund in Germany, alternative fuels have been used since1985. Refuse-derived fuel is one of three alternative fuels used at the plant that together contribute up to 65% of overall fuel needs. The other fuels are chipped tyres and mean and bone meal. Each alternative fuel has been through an intensive trial process which has shown significant reductions in emissions of carbon dioxide and oxides of nitrogen.
