New CEMEX mortar division supplies leading supermarket contract

24th February 2009:  A new Asda supermarket in Rugby, Warwickshire is being built with the expertise of a new mortar division of CEMEX UK, the leading building materials provider. The new division, previously part of the Readymix business, is headed up by Director, David Gordon and is providing dry silo mortar to the new supermarket, close to one of the company’s regional offices.

CEMEX has been selected by contractors, Online Brickwork to provide dry silo mortar for the 86,000 sq ft store which is the first major supermarket in the town centre.  In addition to the supermarket, the retail complex will house 16 further retail outlets, 440 car parking spaces and provide an estimated 600 jobs for the local community.

“These are difficult times for the building industry, so we are delighted to be supplying this local project, especially as it is in a community of which we are very much a part,” comments David Gordon.

CEMEX has provided three different colours of mortar, natural and two shades exclusive to this contract.  For the main building work, the Asda Golden Brown mortar, appropriately named, has been matched to the bricks at the request of the architects. The second exclusive shade, Tudor Brown, involved delivery of a small quantity in bags to match some brickwork close to an existing building.

“Factory produced dry silo mortar has many advantages over mortar mixed on site.  The main advantages are exact colour matching nationwide, production of a consistently high quality product and less wastage than traditional mortar.concludes David Gordon.

CEMEX UK commissioned a new mortar factory in Braintree in Essex last year, representing a £6 million investment and extending the company’s mortar offer to London and the South East giving the business nationwide coverage.  The new plant highlights the company’s commitment to the future of the industry.
