New director appointed at cemex’s south ferriby cement plant
10th February 2009: Global building solutions company CEMEX has appointed Philip Baynes-Clarke as new plant director at South Ferriby cement plant in North Lincolnshire with immediate effect. Mr Baynes-Clarke replaces John Whyatt, who has been in charge of the plant since 2002, and has been appointed as Operations Inbound Director with responsibility for CEMEX UK’s cement raw materials as well as primary and alternative fuels.
Mr Baynes-Clarke joined CEMEX (then RMC) in 2001 as a graduate chemical engineer, having previous worked for British Sugar as part of his degree program and has
over the past seven years risen through the company ranks, with responsibilities in different areas of the cement business, including processing, production and operations, before becoming plant director at the company’s Barrington cement plant in Cambridgeshire in 2007.
At Barrington plant, which recently ceased to manufacture cement, Mr Baynes-Clarke was credited for a number of major performance-related achievements, including record clinker production in 2006, an excellent health and safety record which saw the plant going five years without a lost time injury, and improving the environmental performance at the plant by increasing the use of alternative fuels from 30% to 60%, thereby reducing the carbon footprint and the nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by over 50%.
In his new role, Mr Baynes-Clarke will be responsible for operations and improvements. He will report to vice president for cement operations in the UK, Carlos Uruchurtu. Mr Baynes-Clarke explained: “I am excited about the challenges of this new role at a plant, which is more than twice the size of Barrington. My focus will be to continue the alternative fuels programme that has already been firmly established in South Ferriby, whilst identifying and implementing process efficiencies in all areas of the operations.”
Originally from West Sussex, Mr Baynes-Clarke, 29 has a degree in chemical engineering from Loughborough University in Leicestershire, and will be relocating to the South Ferriby area with his wife and dog. In his spare time he enjoys the outdoors and exploring the countryside, and takes a keen interest in web design projects.
