Key initiatives in 2006/7 to improve service, delivery and products
Cyclists and large vehicles
In 2009 cyclists cycled over 3.1 billion miles and as fuel and transport costs increase, more people are getting on their bikes.
On today's busy roads cyclists are competing for road space with buses, cars, lorries, motorbikes and many other vehicles and it is a sad statistic that on average there are 24 cyclist deaths a year involving large goods vehicles (LGVs). This represents 20% of the total number of cyclists killed whereas LGVs make up just 5.5% of all vehicles.
Over the last seven years CEMEX UK has been working to help support its drivers so that they aren't involved in incidents with cyclists and for the last two years, with cyclists to educate them about safe cycling around large vehicles. More...
Freight traffic on River Severn
Commercial barges are now a familiar sight on the River Severn in Worcestershire transporting aggregates between Ripple quarry and our handling facility at Ryall. Perch and Chub make seven trips a day on the two-mile run. It is the first major freight traffic to flow on the waterway for many years. New wharves have been built at both sites to handle the freight traffic which is expected to cut 340,000 lorry journeys over the next decade.
Innovative transport solution
CEMEX's innovative, intermodal bulk transport system can be used on rail, sea or road. Built specifically to carry cement and pulverised fuel ash, the units are capable of carrying heavier loads than many traditional methods of transport. They can be easily transferred between road-going flatbed trucks, rail-based rolling stock and a variety of ships. The company's cement business is currently using the system to supply pulverised fuel ash to the Heathrow terminal five development. Over a five-year period, it is supplying 130,000 tonnes.
