CEMEX encourages its operating businesses to participate in award schemes at all levels to demonstrate a responsible approach to environmental management, logistics and products.
Sustainability
Restoration In 2006, CEMEX was presented with coveted Cooper Heyman Cup at Quarry Products Association (QPA) Showcase 2006 for its restoration work at Attenborough Nature Reserve in Nottinghamshire. The company also won the Restoration Award with Special Merit for our Powburn Quarry in Northumberland. The concrete products business won the national industry association award for waste minimisation in 2003.
In Northern Ireland, two quarries, a block plant and a concrete plant of subsidiary Readymix plc were granted awards in 2003 by the national industry association for dust reduction, water management, landscaping and restoration.
Products
In 2004, CEMEX won the prestigious Business Commitment to the Environment award, at the European Business Awards, with our GlasphaltTM product, an innovative asphalt surfacing incorporating crushed waste glass.
Logistics
During 2003, the cement business won Motor Transport magazine?s Good Citizen Award for innovative bulk tanks used to supply pulverised fuel ash contracts at Heathrow?s terminal five project.
Emissions
In 2004, the cement business won the Process section of the European Business Awards for the Environment for its pioneering project to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions at its Rugby cement plant. The project had previously won the national Green Apple Award for Science and Technology and overall British Green Champion award in 2003.
Health and safety
With CEMEX's commitment to maintaining a high standard of health and safety in the business, the business is actively keen to participate in award schemes and has been recognised by key organisations within the industry.
Occupational risk
In 2006, CEMEX won 7 gold medals, 3 gold awards and the prestigious gold award for managing occupational road risk in the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents Occupational Health and Safety Awards.
In 2006, CEMEX Logistics also received the Gold Award for Managing Occupational Road Risk (MORR) 2006 and is now being considered for the overall trophy.
Best practice
In 2005, CEMEX was the overall winner of the Quarry Products Association Health and Safety Best Practice awards after winning nine individual awards.
Three of the businesses companies won health and safety awards in the 2004 British Precast Concrete Federation Best Practice awards.
